There a millions of ways to get past this, The way I fixed this was by installing a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client on my computer. I installed ProXPN and setup a free account with them. It's not that fast or reliable but it gets the job done for some quick playing spells on the Minecraft server.

For some reason, whenever I join one of many different minecraft servers, I am blocked from joining with the message that I cant use a Proxy or VPN even though I am not using one in the first place.

The error means that the socket is not listening to the TCP connections. This means that it's usually a server issue, or the client has disconnected from the socket connection. Im not sure how a VPN or a proxy server would fix this, since it's something to do with web sockets.
