Regarding wait times I always. Get in a physical airport line, start the chat, and get in the phone call “line”. Normally all 3 works and occasionally I’ll go to a AA lounge and ask the person for help there. It’s shorter and they don’t always make you check in.

The best service at American is the ConciergeKey help desk, but yes, customer relations takes a while to reply
I have been waiting a month to be refunded $560 from them. Still cannot get any response since they say they can’t help over the phone and I can only contact customer relations who only work via email. I have sent at least 30 emails and no response to this day.
