According to ancient Greek mythology, the first King of Chios was Oinopeonas (or Inopion), grandson of Minos King of Crete, and son of Dionysus and Ariadne, who taught the islanders how to cultivate vines. The myth says that the island owes its name to the daughter of Oinopeonas, Chiona.
Anavatos is a Medieval - Byzantine tower-village that is found in the central region of Chios, at a 16-kilometre distance from the town. Hidden from sight, built at the top of a cliff and plunging into a large granite rock, it forms quite an impressive sight.
Apart from being famous for its formidable navy and for its great commercial strength which profoundly affected scientific and cultural growth, Chios is regarded as the birth place of the greatest poet of ancient times Homer.
The old antimony mines of Chios are located in the north part of Chios island, near Keramos village. Antimony (and/or stibnite) was first mined here from 1980 to 1890 and then again from 1950 until 1952.
