If you wanna have some tips specifically suitable for you, you should state the cities between you are planning to travel. 500 or more doesn't tell anything - it could be cheap price on some routes. But as a general tip: try using Google Flights for example.

I've used skiplagged to book cheaper flights even without the hidden city. They are good at exploring all the combinations with layovers and allow you to see price options for one way that are normally locked in a round trip deal when directly from the airline.
I go on Google flights in incognito then click “Explore” and select “1 week trip” in “the next 6 months”. Then you can click on the map view and look around to see the cheapest flights for any city.
Finding cheap flights is more about how early you book, when you plan the trip (be flexible), and how trafficked are the airports (bigger airports are usually cheaper). I like Google Flight + Kayak Map for getting general ideas about what destinations may be cheap when I have no specific destination in mind.
