The travels of Mary and Joseph from Egyptian territory all the way north to Nazareth is a journey of more than 140 miles (225 kilometers, see Luke 2:39 - 40)! Jesus spends his childhood and young adult years living in Nazareth (which fulfills the prophecy stated in Matthew 2:23).
The route they took: Galilee, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Egypt. The family arrived unharmed in the land of the Nile, where they found shelter and sustenance among the many Jews then living in Egypt.
The city was about fifteen miles in circumference (Pliny), and when looked at from above represented a Macedonian cloak, such as was worn by Alexander's heroic ancestors. A colossal mole joined the island to the main land and made a double harbor, the best in all Egypt.
Search the Bible. Alexander the Great founded his namesake city, Alexandria, in 331 B.C.E. in Egypt. The city was built on a stretch of land already occupied by a small Egyptian village between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Mareotis (Lake Mariout).

He ordered the death of newborn babies in Bethlehem, and Joseph and Mary were warned in a dream to get out and go to Egypt with the child until those seeking his life were dead.
The Holy Family is said to have fled to Egypt, where King Herod could exert no political powers and consequently, would not be able to harm baby Jesus. Upon arriving in Egypt, the Holy Family moved locations very frequently so as to avoid the reach of Herod’s spies.
