Free Air is one of the first novels about the road trip, a subject around which the Beats (most notably Jack Kerouac) would build a cult following in the mid-20th century. In the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, set initially in 1920, Jimmy and his girlfriend Pearl are reading Free Air.
Other then the themes of politics and crime, Boardwalk Empire isn't at all similar to The Wire, and it certainly isn't similar to Breaking Bad, but it's still very, very good. The visual style is lush, the acting is wonderful, the stories are engaging, the characters rich in layers and nuance.

The first, Free Air, by Sinclair Lewis, is read by Jimmy Darmody, a young hitman, and his prostitute lover, Pearl. Free Air, published by Harcourt in 1919, one year before the start of Boardwalk Empire, was one of the first true American road novels.
Free Air can be summed up as a book about the great American road trip. Claire Boltwood and takes her father Mr. Boltwood on a cross country car trip from New York city all the way to Seattle, WA.
