This is because the airline wants to keep the window open for passengers willing to pay for their preferred seats as much as possible.

You can check in at the airport directly. They assign you a random seat for free
15 Μαρ 2021 · Yes, this is an indigo specific issue. This is definitely illegal. You can only auto assign for free, and that too you get boarding pass generated 4-6 hours before departure.
