Under a Student visa, you must be sponsored to do full time study because you are quite literally meant to study, that’s what allowed you into the UK in the first place; also you can only be sponsored on a visa if the undergraduate course is up to 5 years.
As long as you’re not supposed to be at uni, or on a work placement, you can go anywhere you want during your free time, be it on the weekend or during breaks. I had to go back to my country during my mandatory work placement to attend a funeral, and was out of the country for 3 days.
