Legionnaires’ disease is a very serious type of pneumonia (lung infection) caused by bacteria called Legionella. In nature, Legionella live in fresh water and rarely cause illness. In man-made settings, Legionella can grow if water is not properly maintained.
In 2020, 87 North Carolina beaches were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least one day and 7 of those beaches were unsafe on at least 25% of the days they were tested according to Safe for Swimming?, Environment North Carolina Research and Policy Center’s annual analysis of bacteria testing.

Limitations to the accuracy of this information include sick people who do not seek healthcare, and healthcare providers and others who do not always recognize, confirm or report notifiable conditions.
