Best area to stay on vacation in Dubai. I am going on vacation in 3 weeks with my wife and 2 young kids (2 and 4) for 5 days and was wondering what may be the ideal area to stay in Dubai. Downtown? By Dubai mall? Jumeirah Beach? Elsewhere? I will be renting a car but don’t want to spend most of my time just driving around?

If you plan to spend a lot of time at the Dubai Mall/downtown area, stay closer. If you are going to be visiting a lot of different places all over Dubai, pick a central spot in your budget. If a view is important, that's one thing. If cheaper budget (i.e. hostels) that's another.
I stayed in Jumeirah once in summer and a two block walk nearly killed me - and I was raised in a desert. If you don’t care about the glitz and glamour, I recommend staying around Old Dubai, somewhere near the souks and the creek.
Where to stay in Dubai? We are planning our first trip to Dubai in couple of months with our toddler. We are looking to stay in an Airbnb. We see two concentrated areas - near palm/Dubai marina and downtown Dubai.
If you wanted piece and quiet along with amazing desert views I would head out to either Qasr Al Sarab or Bani Yas Island for some R&R and amazing social media pics. Qasr Al Sarab is near to where they filmed Star Wars and this is where the cast stayed.
If you stay at any of the hotels in Madinat Jumeirah then you can use all of them (JBH, Naseem, Qasr). Cool beach right next to Burj Al Arab - Kite Beach has a Burj view too, it's free.
The only one I can think of in Jumeirah is Dubai Marina Beach Resort and some of the lower costs hotels along JBR/The Walk that will allow access to the now public/private beach of The Walk. Alternatively go to google maps and find beach front hotels with their prices displayed.
