Since 1998, Care for Children has pioneered family-based care in China, helping transform their child welfare system. Foster care now represents one of the primary methods of care for orphaned and vulnerable children.
In the 1990s, China was heavily reliant on institutions to care for orphans and abandoned children. In 1998, when Care for Children started working in China, its institutions were filled with girls, a situation that reflected a national one-child policy and a cultural preference for boys.
Care for Children has a ‘vision for a million children’ in China. Major Projects. In 1998, Care for Children pioneered family placement care (long-term foster care), an alternative to institutional care for orphaned and abandoned children in China.
2 Μαρ 2022 · Several priority areas related to child development are identified by UNICEF China, including multidimensional poverty, social assistance, children with disability, early childhood development and education for children aged 0-6 years old, vocational education, health, child protection, and child-friendly city.

In China, Holt’s family strengthening programs focus on education to lift children and families out of poverty. Child sponsors and donors provide the critical support needed to help children attend school for as long as possible — creating generational change for thousands of families.
