The fourteenth California mission of San José was founded on June 11, 1797 in the land of the Ohlone people. It became the agricultural and livestock powerhouse of the northern missions and had the second largest agricultural production of all 21 missions.

Visiting the Mission. Little remains of the original mission. There are a few portions of original walls, the reconstructed church, and small museum (the padres’ wing of the original mission). The unusually short bell tower (which is also a reconstruction) houses four original bells.
One of the largest missions, second in size only to San Luis Rey, Mission San José was practically destroyed by the earthquake of 1868. The monastery wing, which is now the mission museum, was one of the few buildings to have survived. The mission church, built in 1985, is an authentic replica.
