The more flexable you are the better the deals you can find. Google flights and then use points and miles to look for availability on those flights. Easier to do with points already accumulated and flexibility in dates. Great for non peak season travel, less than 4 weeks away or more than 10 months.
Finding cheap flights is more about how early you book, when you plan the trip (be flexible), and how trafficked are the airports (bigger airports are usually cheaper). I like Google Flight + Kayak Map for getting general ideas about what destinations may be cheap when I have no specific destination in mind.
If you buy far in advance, it's usually cheaper, so it's good that you're looking now. As someone else stated, it's easier and cheaper to fly between big airports. A lot of times it just comes down to dates. I've gone a day earlier and paid $100 less than if I had gone a day later.
