Pitman's duties aboard the Titanic included working out the ship's position through celestial observation, finding the deviation of the ship's compass, general supervision around the decks, looking after the quartermasters and relieving the officers on the bridge whenever necessary.
Herbert John "Bert" Pitman MBE (20 November 1877 – 7 December 1961) was an English Merchant Navy seaman, who was the Third Officer of RMS Titanic when it sank in the North Atlantic Ocean with heavy loss of life after striking an iceberg during the night of 14 April 1912 on its maiden voyage.
In recognition of his many years with the merchant marine, Lieutenant-Commander Herbert John Pitman, RD, RNR, was created a Member of The Order Of The British Empire (MBE) in 1948, considered a well-deserved tribute for “long and meritorious service at sea and in dangerous waters during the war.”
Herbert John Pitman was born in the village of Sutton Montis near Castle Cary, Somerset, England on Tuesday the 20th of November in the year 1877. He was the son of farmer Henry Pitman (born circa 1813) and Sarah.A. Pitman (née Marchant, born in 1851, Bloder, Somerset, England).
While the Titanic was at sea, Pitman's duties included working out celestial observation and compass deviation, general supervision of the decks, looking to the quartermasters, and relieving the bridge officers when necessary.
Pitman, a widower, spent his retirement living in Pitcombe, Somerset, only a few miles away from his old home in Castle Cary, and lived with his niece, a Mrs. A. Mainstone. On the 7th of December 1961, 84 year old Lieutenant-Commander Herbert John Pitman, MBE, RD, RNR, died of a subarachnoid haemorrhage, a rare form of stroke.
Herbert John Pitman was the Third Officer of the Titanic. He was sent away by First Officer Murdoch to take charge of one of the first lifeboats, so his role in the disaster was minimal.
