29 Νοε 2022 · Three of the Big Island volcanoes are still active: Hualalai, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Kilauea is the most active and last eruption in 2018, while the other two could erupt at any time. Mauna Kea is dormant, Kohala inactive, and Mahukona has probably never breached the ocean surface.

The evolution of Hawaiian volcanoes occurs in several stages of growth and decline. The fifteen volcanoes that make up the eight principal islands of Hawaii are the youngest in a chain of more than 129 volcanoes that stretch 5,800 kilometers (3,600 mi) across the North Pacific Ocean, called the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain. 16 Ιουν 2021 · Researchers inspected seismic data within a period of one and a half years in their procedure, and found two magmatic intrusions from December 2017 to March 2018, which suggested a long precursor to the initial volcanic eruption at least six months before the eruption event (Feng et al., 2020).
