What is two-step verification? Two-step verification (sometimes called multi-factor authentication) helps protect you by making it more difficult for someone else to sign in to your Microsoft account. It uses two different forms of identity: your password, and a contact method (also known as security info).
Sign in using a security key at the lock screen. After you've registered your security key, select the security key image from the Windows 10 lock screen. Insert your security key into your device's USB port and sign in to Windows using your security key PIN.
After the account.live.com page has opened, select Security & Privacy, go to More Security Settings, scroll down and select Set up two-step verification. You'll have the option to confirm your identity via email, phone or the Microsoft account App.
Go to the Security info page using the steps above. Select Add sign-in method. Select Choose a method and then Authenticator app. Follow the on-screen instructions, including using your mobile device to scan the QR code, and then select Next.
