Founded in 1898, the Buddhist Church of San Francisco was the first Jodo Shinshu (Pure Land) Buddhist temple established in the continental United States and is the flagship temple of the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA).
After a number of life events that included coming out as part of the LGBTQ community, Rev. Opel left the faith of her upbringing and after a time away from all spiritual practices, began looking into Buddhism. Eventually she made her way to the Spokane Buddhist Temple and never left.
Services (now on Zoom) Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved our lectures on Buddhism to the Zoom platform. We meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 10:30AM PST (except May). A historical landmark in San Francisco's Chinatown, the Buddha's Universal Church is the largest Buddhist church in the United States and home to the largest congregation in the City.
