Based in Carlyle, Illinois, The Maschhoffs, Inc., is one of the largest family-owned pork production companies in the United States. The company maintains a herd of about 110,000 sows, a large number of which are raised by contract growers, small Midwest farmers located in seven states that Maschhoffs calls its "production partners."
They expanded the sow herd from 150 to 700 in 1979 and continued to grow throughout the 1980s. In 1996, they collaborated with family farmers to raise wean pigs, further expanding the business.
