The base game is an absolute joke difficulty wise, but it's actually paced really well in games like Pokemon Polished Crystal, and that one even includes a nuzlocke mode. I'd definitely reccomend it, although it does take away from the gen 2 asthetic a bit since it has some updated features.

Anything flareon and up I'd sort of consider complete pokemon. They get access to usable moves or ok coverage. They are not perfect with real issues ranging from obtainability to maybe the most severe, reliant on single-use TM's that are in a ton of competition (flareon+granbull with shadow ball for example).

Pokemon from the same evolutionary line as previously caught Pokemon may be skipped in favour of another encounter to encourage variety. 3. Shiny Pokemon may be caught at any time. 4. If a Pokemon faints, it may not be used in battle any further.
