Here, I review the definition of viruses and life that I proposed recently (Forterre, 2016, and references therein) and I discuss the virocell concept, that challenges the traditional view that assimilate viruses to their virions. Viruses are known to infect most organisms, including bacteria, blue-green algae, fungi, plants, insects, and vertebrates, but we attempt here to provide an overview of virology that emphasizes their potential as human disease agents.
25 Σεπ 2012 · These puzzles consider the origin of genetic information in viruses, viruses as symbiotic partners, the structural diversity of viruses and the role of viruses in the origin of cellular life.
17 Μαρ 2023 · Like other microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, fungi and parasites), viruses are the infectious agents associated with disease in humans. Unlike other infectious agents (Fig. 48.1), viruses are obligate intracellular parasites; that is, they require living host cells to multiply.
important to understand viruses that might jump from one host to another, threatening us, our animals or our crops. Over the past ten years, the number of known and named viruses has...
Viruses are tiny, acellular entities that can usually only be seen with an electron microscope. Their genomes contain either DNA or RNA—never both—and they replicate using the replication proteins of a host cell. Viruses are diverse, infecting archaea, bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals.
immunode ciency disease virus (HIV), in uenza virus, Ebola virus, Zika virus, West Nile virus, recently SARS-CoV-2, and most recently mpox virus (formerly monkeypox) have emphasized human viral infections.
