Arkansas has been hit hard by abandonments since its rail mileage peaked in the 1920's; 2,500 miles have been removed since that time. Arkansas's rich agricultural resources, notably farming products and timber, led to numerous branch lines crisscrossing the state.

In 1850 and 1851, Captain Joshua Barney was ordered by the Secretary of War and the Chief Engineer of the War Department to travel to Arkansas and survey a railroad route from St. Louis, Missouri to the Big Bend of the Red River between Texas and Arkansas. Thus began the railroad age in Arkansas.
16 Ιουλ 2024 · As early as 1835, plans were being made for the construction of railroads in the future state of Arkansas. A group led by Roswell Beebe was planning surveys that had been ordered by the U.S. Department of War for a railroad running from Cairo, Illinois, to Fulton (Hempstead County).
