The 1892 Dime is the first date of the new type designed by Charles Barber. As a result, many were saved by collectors as a novelty, so high grade examples are fairly plentiful today. Nearly 1,000 examples have been certified in Mint State. most appearing in the MS63 and MS64 grade levels.

1892. In 1900, the obverse and reverse hubs were changed (see Major Design Changes). Barber dimes were minted into 1916 when, after the minimum 25 years, they were succeeded by Adolph A. Weinman's "Mercury" design. The Barber coins saw extensive usage and most were worn down to AG condition.

The purpose of this article is to give Barber dime collectors a basic understanding of the series, including the history, major rarities, and tips for collecting.
While there are a number of scarcities and rarities in the 1892-1916 series, the exceedingly rare 1894-S dime being famous among them, there are enough common dates that the type set collector will encounter no difficulty acquiring an example in any desired grade from Good to AU.
