The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, [1] including the construction of public buildings and roads.
Enacted by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the plan included several public works programs intended to get millions of unemployed Americans back to work.
New Deal Programs. The New Deal was an amalgam of dozens of programs and agencies created by the Roosevelt Administration and the Congress. Some came into being by law, some by executive order; some are well known, some are not; some changed names or were amended in mid-course; some lasted only a few years, some still exist.
