The 1944 D MS 63 Lincoln steel penny with the wheat reverse won the auction record of $115,000 on August 9, 2007. Interestingly, all three coins were sold at Heritage Auctions.

How 1944 Steel Pennies Were Made. Another transitional error (‘Struck on a Zinc-Coated Steel planchet’) happened during the transition from 1943 to 1944 pennies. This mistake happened in the Denver and San Francisco Mint, where a few 1944 pennies were produced using the previous year’s steel penny planchets instead of the new bronze planchets.
