The 911 GT2, utilizing a steel 993 Twin Turbo chassis with modifications for racing, scored numerous victories in a wide variety of racing venues. With its carbon fiber bodywork stretched to house ultra-wide wheels and race tires, the GT2 displays an awesome presence.
The 993 Turbo engines are ridiculously heavy (589lbs), and the only real difference between the air-cooled and water-cooled chassis in terms of weight is the number of heat exchangers and density of water versus oil. As a point of comparison, the 996 Turbo engines weigh 573lbs.
The 993 Porsche 911 GT2 (or GT as it was initially called) was built in order to meet homologation requirements for the GT2 class racing which had banned all-wheel-drive vehicles by the mid 1990’s.
The Le Mans inspired 993 GT2 burst onto the supercar scene in 1995. Based on the 993 Turbo, the GT2 found even more performance thanks to a power boost to 430bhp and a weight saving of nearly 300kg.
