The angels that sinned. —Better, the angels for their sin: it gives the reason why they were not spared, and points to some definite sin. What sin is meant?

Peter with this verse cited some historical examples of God’s judgment and condemnation of the wicked (noting also that the righteous were spared), these being: (1) the example of the sinning angels; (2) the case of Noah and his generation; (3) the example of Sodom and Gomorrah; and (4) the deliverance of Lot.
God is waiting because he desires that all would repent. He “takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked” (Ezek 33:11) and pleads with sinners to receive his mercy (Isa 55:1–11; 65:1–5). Peter portrays repentance as a destination that God’s patience allows sinners to reach (cf. Rom 2:4).
17 Ιουν 1998 · He cannot abstain from justice. God cannot change His essence and abandon His standards. He must act according to His absolute character, for He is immutable. God has no latitude with Himself, so He cannot be lenient toward sin. God must judge sin or the sinner who will not accept His judgment of sin through Christ.
