The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is publishing an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking concerning emissions from new nonroad vehicles and engines that are currently unregulated, and highway motorcycles.
US EPA Motorcycle Standards (g.km) Starting with the 2006 model year EPA re-defined Class I to include motorcycles with engines smaller than 50 cubic centimetres.
From January 1 2020, tough Euro 5 limits will apply to new motorcycles and mopeds. Designed to ensure this category of vehicles will pollute less, the regulation sets stringent limits for a number of tailpipe emissions that could be tough for two-stroke applications to meet.
The JRC has tested six mopeds certified for different emission standards (pre-Euro 1, Euro 1 and Euro 2) and a number of motorcycles equipped with four-stroke engines. All the tests have been carried out at the VELA laboratory of the JRC. The main results can be summarized as follow:
On 17 June 1997, Directive 97/24/EC implemented Euro 1 standards to reduce air pollutant emissions from two- and three-wheel vehicles, which are referred to in later directives as Category L vehicles. Standards were adopted in two stages for mopeds and one stage for motorcycles.
