12 Ιουλ 2024 · Here is a breakdown of the common classifications and interpretations of kidney stone sizes: Small stones (<4 mm): These stones are relatively small in size, comparable to a grain of rice or even smaller. They can range from a mere speck to around 4mm. These stones are often asymptomatic or may cause minimal discomfort during passage.
A 4 mm stone has an 80% chance of passage while a 5 mm stone has a 20% chance. If a stone does not pass, certain procedures (usually by a urology specialist doctor) may be needed. The process of stone formation is called nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis.

Large kidney stones are stones that measure approximately 5 mm or larger. Based on their size, they may have trouble moving through the urinary tract out of the body. In fact, they are prone to become lodged causing severe pain and other symptoms. Large kidney stones require intervention for removal, typically, a surgical procedure.
ESWL is the first choice of treatment for UPJ stones that are 4 mm – 5 mm in diameter. Shockwave lithotripsy has fewer complications than ureteroscopy and has similar success rates up to 90% for small UPJ stones.
