Once a year, for 40 years, the Brown sisters have had their portrait taken—listen to the photographer speak about this simple, yet amazing series of photographs. In August of 1974, the photographer Nicholas Nixon made a group portrait of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters, Heather, Mimi, and Laurie—the Brown sisters.
In an exclusive conversation with LensCulture, Nixon talks about why he threw away the first photo of “The Brown Sisters,” imparts some invaluable wisdom gained from 40+ years of making portraits—and reveals the moments when you need to put down the camera and simply be present.
With a simple yet powerful concept, Nixon captured the essence of time, freezing moments that would soon become cherished memories. The very first photograph features the four sisters- Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie – in a beautifully arranged composition, each sister radiating their unique personality.
Five years have come and gone, and by now, Heather, Bebe, Laurie, and Mimi have grown into fine women ready to take on the world how they pleased. By now, the siblings must have already begun building their individual careers, seeing how their confidence shines even beyond the picture.
