Infectious Disease. Aka Communicable Diseases. Caused by micro-organisms. Parasite – lives in/on and feeds on host.
Display Slide 1. Explain that the Infectious Disease Operations course serves as a foundation for workers who may need to work in an environment where infectious disease or diseases are known or suspected to be present.
What causes infectious diseases? Infectious diseases are caused by a variety of agents that invade your body from the outside. These include: Viruses. Bacteria. Fungi. Parasites. Prions. You may develop symptoms when your cells are damaged or destroyed by the invading organism and as your immune system responds to the infection.
An infection is the invasion of the body’s tissues by microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. These disease-causing agents produce reactions in their host as the immune system fights the microorganisms and the toxins they produce. A cold is a type of viral infection.
Main causes of infection. Person-to-person via hands of health-care providers, patients and visitors. Personal equipment (e.g. stethoscopes, personal digital assistants) and clothing. Airborne transmission.
Knowing the methods by which a disease is transmitted is important in infection control and in attempting to decrease nosocomial infections. The most common mode of transmissions that occur in the hospital environment are contact, droplet, and airborne.
This lecture covers microorganisms and some of the threats they pose to human health, such as infectious diseases. Professor Imperiali also discusses antibiotics and the mechanisms by which bacteria become resistant.
