An infection is the invasion of the body’s tissues by microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. These disease-causing agents produce reactions in their host as the immune system fights the microorganisms and the toxins they produce. A cold is a type of viral infection.
Main causes of infection. Person-to-person via hands of health-care providers, patients and visitors. Personal equipment (e.g. stethoscopes, personal digital assistants) and clothing. Airborne transmission.
Infectious diseases can be caused by several different classes of pathogenic organisms (commonly called germs). These are viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. Almost all of these organisms are microscopic in size and are often referred to as microbes or microorganisms.
