The Oregon boundary dispute or the Oregon Question was a 19th-century territorial dispute over the political division of the Pacific Northwest of North America between several nations that had competing territorial and commercial aspirations in the region.
29b. 54° 40' or Fight. The southern boundary of the United States with Mexico was not the only western territory under dispute. The Oregon Territory spanned the modern states of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington, as well as the western coast of Canada up to the border of Russian Alaska.

The annexation of Oregon Country became the basis of one of the most well-known slogans in US history: Fifty-Four Forty, or Fight. It wasn’t used during the campaign. The phrase was first used in January 1845, well after the election was over.
