What is the theoretical and practical significance of classifying the depth of a burn? Historically, burns have been classified by the extent of penetration into the tissues as degrees (Figures 1 and 2).
Fifth-degree burns are burns in which most of the hypodermis is lost, charring and exposing the muscle underneath. Sometimes, fifth-degree burns can be fatal .charred, white skin, and exposed bone.
