To describe management trends of fifth metacarpal neck (5MCN) fractures within a large health care system. We aimed to define patient and surgeon factors associated with nonsurgical versus surgical treatment, as well as to identify factors associated with receiving care only in the emergency department (ED).
The fifth metacarpal is the most frequently fractured bone in this category, and fractures in the first and fifth metacarpals are often associated with different clinical challenges. Non-border metacarpals are prone to diaphyseal fractures, while border metacarpals typically involve the base or neck [ 1 , 2 ].
All studies were scrutinized to reflect a wide spectrum of treatment options for metacarpal neck fractures. Additionally, two widely circulated orthopaedic textbooks were utilized for general information on the presentation, radiographic features, surgical indications and fixation techniques.
