5 Σεπ 2024 · Metacarpal Fractures are the most common hand injury and are divided into fractures of the head, neck, or shaft. Diagnosis is made by orthogonal radiographs the hand. Treatment is based on which metacarpal is involved, location of the fracture, and the rotation/angulation of the injury.

Determine critical diagnostic imaging studies when evaluating patients with a suspected 5th metacarpal fracture. Compare the treatment options available for 5th metacarpal fractures, including both conservative and surgical care.
Overall, 61 cases (10%) were treated surgically. Types of surgical treatment included K-wire fixation (37), plate fixation (15), screw fixation (8), and external fixation (1). Figure 2 presents the treatment and management distributions for all included 5MCN fractures.

10 Νοε 2015 · In conclusion, current evidence suggested that conservative treatment is the optimum treatment for the fifth metacarpal neck fractures because of reduced total complication rates. Moreover, the TP with K-wires is the worst option with highly total complication rates.

This discussion pertains to fractures of the metacarpal bones other than the thumb metacarpal. Fractures of the neck of metacarpals 2 through 5 are common.
Non-operative management. Non-operative management is appropriate for the majority of 5th MC neck fractures1-3 and can be achieved with a single appointment. Buddy taping and early motion of the digit is the most common intervention required for this fracture.
