L5 S1 fusion is major surgery whereby the L5/S1 disc is removed and the L5 and S1 spinal bones are stabilized by hardware. Indications for L5 S1 fusion are debilitating pain and dysfunction arising from degenerative disc disease, slipped disc, fractures, recurrent herniation, sciatica, scoliosis, and spinal canal narrowing.
4 Μαρ 2020 · Results. Nine patients were reoperated without implant removal (four pseudarthrosis, two hematomas, one sepsis, one L4–L5 disc hernia, and one L4–L5 disc degeneration). At a mean of 20±9 months, all scores improved significantly from baseline values, with net improvement in ODI of 23.3±19.9.
The procedure did not gain immediate favor because of low success rates; about 36% to 52% of patients found significant pain relief and about 32% to 56% had a successful fusion of vertebral bones. 2 Kunc Z, Sourek K, Bret J. Transabdominal anterior interbody fusion of spondylolisthesis L5-S1.
2 Σεπ 2017 · ALIF is particularly useful for procedures at the L4/L5 & L5/S1 level as it allows excellent visualization and access to ventral surface of the disc space. The ALIF approach has demonstrated high fusion rates, good radiological outcomes, good restoration of disc height & lordosis, and also a reduced risk for dural injuries ( 3 , 7 , 8 ).
29 Νοε 2022 · How successful is ALIF surgery? The majority of studies show that ALIF leads to a successful fusion between the vertebrae in at least 90% of cases, with many studies showing rates of fusion in greater than 95% of cases.
1 Ιαν 1992 · Objective: To determine the fusion rate of an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), and axial arthrodesis at the lumbosacral junction in adult patients undergoing surgery for 1- and 2-level degenerative spine conditions.
30 Δεκ 2020 · The surgical treatment of disc disease at L5-S1 with minimally invasive technique Axialif has led to good clinical and radiological outcomes. In our opinion, this method can be a good alternative to more aggressive approaches such as either the anterior retroperitoneal or the posterior approaches.
