(1) Acts 5:4 4) BE SURE OF THE PENETRATING DETECTION OF SUPERFICIAL RELIGION (Hebrews 4:12) a) God the Holy Spirit told Peter that Ananias and Sapphira were lying. i) Peter was an apostle; and God spoke to Peter, and Peter declared the Word of God. ii) The Word of God was in the mouths of the apostles.
Acts 5:3-4 also demonstrates that the Holy Spirit possesses Deity. Verse 3 says Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, but verse 4 says he lied to God. Therefore, the Holy Spirit must be God – i.e., He possesses Deity as do the Father and the Son. This is the first recorded example of discipline or chastisement of members of the early church.
OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER. To examine the sin of Ananias and Sapphira in lying to the Holy Spirit. To note the amazing signs and wonders that were done by the apostles, in which all were healed. To consider the apostles' response when government seeks to stifle the preaching of the gospel.
