31 Οκτ 2023 · The Doubling Rule is a spelling rule that kids need to know. It applies to one syllable words with one short vowel that end in one consonant. If a word meets this criteria, the final consonant is doubled when adding a suffix that begins with a vowel.
Essentially it states: If a word has one syllable, one, vowel, AND one final consonant, the last consonant must be doubled before adding a vowel suffix such as –ed or –ing. This 1-page chart can help learners remember when you use the 1-1-1 rule for doubling final consonants.

A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word which creates another word. If the root word has a short vowel and a single consonant, the consonant letter is doubled when the suffix is added. The letter 'x' is never doubled, such as words like mixing, mixed or boxer.
