In this review article the author describes some of the literature related to ageism in nursing, discusses how ageism can affect the quality of the care that is provided to older adult patients, and explains theories that may help explain ageism in nursing.
Ageism in health care delivery and nursing poses a fundamental threat to health and society. In this commentary, implications of age discrimination are presented to generate an agenda for action in nursing management.

Key issues: Investigations of ageism suggest that discrimination negatively affects health and results in poor health care experiences. Age discrimination is present in nursing, exacerbating workforce shortages and limiting the use of expertise within the profession.
3 Μαρ 2024 · To combat ageism in older nurses' practice settings and support their continuation of practice, effective interventions should be organisational-led. The interventions should focus on fostering meaningful relationships between older nurses and their colleagues and managers.
This article provided an overview of the fundamental nature of ageism in nursing in health care settings and introduced a new definition for ageism in nursing that included all the defining attributes of the concept.
