The bounty hunter told people that Texas Red had 'lived' in Agua Fria, when in fact, he was fleeing to Mexico and just stopping in the town. He thought it was more heroic if he'd tracked the outlaw to his lair, rather than hunted him from place to place and finally shot him down the second he stopped for a breath.
