The Texas red oak (Quercus buckleyi) is native to central and eastern Texas, while the Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii) is native to the southeastern United States.

This tree was named after a state geologist from Texas named Benjamin Franklin Shumard, who lived there in the 1800s.
Texas Red Oak is smaller, more often multi-trunked, and more drought tolerant than Shumard Red Oak. The foliage turns bright shades of vivid red and orange in autumn. The bark is dark gray to black with platelike scales, although sometimes it is light gray and smooth.
