21 Σεπ 2017 · On 7 January 2016, the Secretary of Defense authorized the use of the "C" and "R" devices to distinctly recognize members of the U.S. Armed Forces for exceptional performance that has a direct impact on a combat engagement or other military operation.
NPRC will verify the awards to which an Air Force veteran is entitled and forward the medal replacement request, along with the records verification, to AFPC or the Air Reserve Personnel Center for reservists.
It is awarded by the Secretary of the Air Force to numbered units that have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service or outstanding achievement that clearly sets the unit above and apart from similar units.
A "V" device is a metal 1⁄4 -inch (6.4 mm) capital letter "V" with serifs which, when worn on certain decorations awarded by the United States Armed Forces, distinguishes a decoration awarded for combat valor or heroism from the same decoration being awarded for a member's actions under circumstances other than combat. The “V” device, when worn on the same ribbon with cluster, is worn to the (observer left) wearer’s right of such clusters. Denotes participation in a combat parachute jump, helicopter assault landing, combat glider landing, or amphibious assault landing. Wear device on both service and suspension ribbons when authorized.
