Hot Air is a 2019 American comedy-drama film directed by Frank Coraci, written by Will Reichel, and starring Steve Coogan, Taylor Russell and Neve Campbell. The plot follows a conservative talk radio host (Coogan), whose life and worldview is upended by the arrival of his biracial 16-year-old niece.
The film is based on the true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families who, on September 16, 1979, escaped from East Germany to West Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon during the Inner German border -era, when emigration to West Germany was strictly prohibited by the East German government.
On 16 September 1979, eight people from two families escaped from East Germany by crossing the border into West Germany at night in a homemade hot air balloon. The unique feat was the result of over a year and a half of preparations involving three different balloons, various modifications, and a first, unsuccessful attempt.
