French Algeria (French: Alger until 1839, then Algérie afterwards; [1] unofficially Algérie française, [2] [3] Arabic: الجزائر المستعمرة), also known as Colonial Algeria, was the period of Algerian history when the country was a colony and later an integral part of France.

Because that's what French Algeria was, a mix of French and Arabs, and it was reflected on the local heraldry, such as on the old Algiers coat of arms, or the one of Oran, or even the coat of arms of the pieds noirs
20 Μαρ 2016 · In 1875, France created a special ensign for Algerian ships, recalling the tradition of horizontal stripes, with the French colors. The ensign appeared in various flag plates. A date of 1875 has been assigned by Jorge Hurtado.
The national flag of Algeria (علم الجزائر) consists of two equal vertical bars, green and white, charged in the center with a red star and crescent, a symbol of Islam as the nation's prominent faith. The flag was adopted on 3 July 1962. A similar version was used by the Algerian government in exile from 1958 to 1962.
The flag of the Dey of Algiers, captured in 1830 and today in the Victor Hugo Museum in Paris, is red and contains Koranic inscriptions in Arabic, embroidered in gold thread, and a "zulfikar" sword (sword of Ali).
