Study with Quizlet and memorize flashcards containing terms like What are alveoli?, What process are alveoli involved in?, What does blood passing next to the aveoli, returning to the lungs from the rest of the body contain? and more.

4 Σεπ 2024 · The alveoli are highly adapted and specialised for gas exchange. There are many rounded alveolar sacs which give a very large surface area to volume ratio. Alveoli (and the capillaries around them) have thin, single layers of cells to minimise diffusion distance.
An alveolus is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity and is found in the lung parenchyma ( tissue inside the lung). The pulmonary alveoli are the terminal ends of the respiratory tree that outcrop from either alveolar sacs or alveolar ducts; both are sites of gas exchange. The alveolar membrane is the gas-exchange surface.
(ii) The epithelial cells in the lungs are arranged into structures called alveoli. Explain how the alveoli create a surface for efficient gaseous exchange. In your answer you should use appropriate technical terms, spelled correctly.
6 Αυγ 2015 · Alveoli are the basic unit of the gas exchange surface. In summary, the following things can be said about the alveolar shape and structure: Largely polyhedral shape. Open at one end, like a cup. Walls of the alveoli are composed of the pulmonary capillary sheet.
