A US Army soldier trains with a BAR. During the interwar years, as the U.S. Army was reduced significantly in size, the BAR remained in the smaller extant Regular Army and by the 1930s, was also issued to state national guard units to be maintained at their armories.
Some U.S. Army BAR gunners and nearly all of the Marine gunners in the Pacific Theater discarded the M1918A2’s bipod and flash hider to save weight and improve portability. With these modifications, the BAR effectively reverted to its original role as a portable automatic rifle.
3 Ιουν 2014 · During the war, the US Army unofficially went to two BAR rifle squads and deleted the automatic rifle squad. The Marines went one better, essentially fielding three 13-Marine rifle squads that were really reinforced BAR squads–the famous Marine Corps fire team was built around a Browning Automatic Rifle supported by three riflemen.
9 Σεπ 2019 · By the time the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, however, the U.S. Army had been reorganized so that the nine-man rifle squad was built around a single BAR. The BAR had changed slightly, too, the standard issue weapon now being designated the M1918A2.
The BAR gave AEF assault troops the firepower needed to neutralize the German trenches upon reaching them. Patented in 1917 by renowned gun designer John Browning and adopted by the Army in May 1918, the BAR was introduced to American front line units in September 1918 as the M1918.
