A thorough evaluation of each potential alternative fuel against the ideal fuel criteria listed, leads to the choice of NH3 (anhydrous ammonia) as the leading alternative fuel candidate. NH3 has been called “the other hydrogen” and exhibits all of the advantages of hydrogen.
The knock and rough limit crossover occurs at ~13.5:1 for E85 and ~12:1 for gasoline. E85/NH3 has higher knock limit and allows for a higher maximum compression ratio and thermal efficiency. Gasoline/NH3 has a lower roughness limit and allows for a slightly more fuel mixture flexibility.
5 Οκτ 2021 · Blending ammonia with methane is also an effective method to improve the combustion characteristics of NH 3 /air flames propagation. Konnov et al. experimentally investigated the laminar burning velocity of CH 4 /O 2 /N 2 flames doped with 0.5% NH 3 by using a heat flux method.
Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel, so it has potential to reduce carbon dioxide emission from power plants when used as a fuel. However, combustion characteristics of ammonia are notably different from hydrocarbon fuels, especially regarding NOx emission [1].
Four of the most discussed alternative fuels are briefly compared here with their advantages and disadvantages – LNG, Methanol, Ammonia, Hydrogen.
LNG has around 40 % lower volumetric energy density than diesel, roughly the same as LPG. When accounting for the storage system, LNG has roughly 1/3 the volumetric energy density as diesel. Liquid hydrogen, ammonia and methanol have even lower volumetric energy density – around 40-50 % of LNG.
