In ancient Greek and Roman legend Atlantis was a legendary island realm of the far west which was sunk beneath the ocean by the gods to punish its people for their immorality.The term Atlanteans was also applied by the Greeks to the Phoenician colonies along the Barbary Coast of North Africa--that is, the people living near the Atlas Mountains.

The principal sources for the legend of Atlantis are Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias. In Timaeus , Plato describes how Egyptian priests described Atlantis as an island larger than Asia Minor and Libya combined and situated just beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
