Lake Lahontan was a large endorheic prehistoric lake during the Pleistocene that occupied modern northwestern Nevada and extended into northeastern California and southern Oregon. The area of the former lake is a large portion of the Great Basin that borders the Sacramento River watershed to the west.
If you were to stand on the shore of Pyramid Lake and gaze across seemingly endless miles of beautiful blue water, it would be hard to imagine that it could get any larger. But the northern Nevada lake was once part of a much larger body of water that dwarfed modern ones in size.

10 Ιαν 2022 · One of the best places to see the ancient shores of Lake Lahontan is at Grimes Point a short drive out of Reno. It is a 720-acre archeological site that is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1972. Location: Just off U.S. Highway 50 East of Fallon (A Short Drive From Reno)

With willows and cottonwoods scattered along 69 miles of shoreline, the park is one of most popular places in Nevada to boat, fish, water-ski, horseback ride, camp and enjoy the outdoors year-round. Canoeing from Fort Churchill to the lake makes for a great day trip when conditions allow.
