24 Οκτ 2021 · A CR 2 creature is 2.25x CR 1 XP; it is beyond deadly. It being 400 instead would put it at deadly, and state it was an appropriate encounter for 4 level 1 PCs. Instead, it is a hard to deadly encounter for 5 level 1 PCs.
Since we're not strictly limited by what the class can actually do, we can give the beastmaster any animal companion available in a published book. Included are some randomly-picked suggestions. Dire Wolf (MM pg. 321)
Explanation - if you need to make a monster on the fly, use these columns. They provide you with 1) attack damage for a 2-hit multiattack, 2) an area-of-effect option, and 3) a guideline for what level spells the monster might have. The "1x" in the CR1/2 column means only one attack. CR 3 and 4 have a "+2 damage" for their AoE.
They're a nice straightforward enemy you could pair up with a single Crocodile for a simple encounter on the low-end of Medium. If you've only got the Monster Manual and don't want to use homebrew, that's about it for a non-grappling non-human-esque aquatic creatures of appropriate CR.
Incomplete CR2 Monsters. These creatures are tagged with an Improving, Reviewing, or Deletion template. Please help work on the problem presented on the template. Back to Main Page → 5e Homebrew → Creatures → Monsters.
This tool works by looking at the stats entered for a certain monster and comparing them to the average values in the table for a monster of the same CR, calculating a ratio for each one. The tool then looks at the average stat values for a monster of the CR you want to scale it to and multiplies them by that ratio.
